Top Ten - Why train your dog ?

Lots of dog owners think that training your dog is only for those who want enter their dogs into competitions. Obedience or Dog Training school will guide the pet owner in the methods used to "train" dogs. It is necessary to learn the skills on how to get the dog to understand what we would like it to do and make sure they respond to those wishes. The idea is to get your dog to try and please you as his master. This will be easier to achieve if he or she is rewarded with treats when they achieve the correct behaviour.

Ten reasons to spend time training your dog are:

1. Training of your pet is an educational process for both the dog and the owner on how they can live together in harmony.

2. Training means spending time with each other - even spending a matter of 15 minutes a day is not only fun for both of you but helps strengthen the bond between the dog and owner.

3. The dog will see you the trainer as an authority figure.

4. Training will help stop common problems such as jumping all over visitors.

5. Training will create variety for the dog and help reduce boredom which in turn will reduce behavioural problems like digging and barking for no reason.

6. Training impresses other dog owners. While everyone else's dogs are going crazy around you and out of control you will be proud to know that your dog will respond to your commands.

7. Trained dogs are a pleasure to take to the vet or grooming centres.

8. Certain councils take into consideration dog training when it comes to registering your dog.

9. Trained dogs can compete in competition. A dog that has discipline and training will be more successful in competition if thats the direction you would like to take with your dog.

10. And finally, having a trained dog is much more enjoyable than having a bratty, spoilt little thing !
